How to Write a Personal Blog: Real Talk from a Fellow Beginner
Hey there! So you're thinking about starting a personal blog, huh? Awesome! I remember when I first dipped my toes into the blogging world – it was equal parts exciting and terrifying. But let me tell you, it's been one heck of a ride, and I wouldn't change it for anything. Now, I'm no blogging guru (is anyone, really?), but I've learned a thing or two along the way. So, grab a cup of coffee (or tea, or heck, a glass of wine – I won't judge), and let's chat about how to get your personal blog off the ground. 1\. Figure Out Your "Why" (No Pressure, Really!) Okay, first things first. Why do you want to blog? And no, "because everyone else is doing it" doesn't count! 😉 When I started, I thought I needed some profound reason. Spoiler alert: I didn't. I just wanted to share my disaster cooking attempts and maybe connect with other kitchen-challenged folks out there. Your reason can be simple too: \- Maybe you want to rant about your favorite TV shows \- Perhaps you're on a fitness journey and want to document your progress \- Or you might just want a creative outlet for your haiku about cats Whatever it is, own it! Your "why" might change over time, and that's totally cool too. 2\. Pick Your Poison (I Mean, Your Topic) "But wait," I hear you say, "isn't a personal blog supposed to be about, well, everything in my life?" Sure, if that's what you want! But let me tell you a secret: having a focus makes blogging so much easier. When I tried to blog about everything, I ended up blogging about nothing. Writer's block city, population: me. But when I niched down to "adventures in cooking (and occasional kitchen fires)," the ideas started flowing. Some ideas to get your wheels turning: Your chaotic attempts at adulting Reviews of every ice cream flavor in your local store (yum!) Your journey learning a new skill (juggling, anyone?) Remember, you're not signing a blood oath here. You can always change direction if you get bored. Choose Where to Set Up Shop Alright, time to get a bit technical (but not too much, I promise). You need to choose a platform for your blog. It's like choosing an apartment for your thoughts. Some options: WordPress: The classic choice. Lots of options, but can be a bit overwhelming. Blogger: Simple and straightforward. Great if you just want to write. Medium: Ready-made audience, but less control over your space. Hunori: Obvious self-promotion here, but if you need a personal blog and a really simple website - we are here for you I started with Blogger because, well, it was free and I was broke. No shame in that game! You can always move houses later if you outgrow it. 4\. Make It Pretty (Or Not, It's Your Call) Now for the fun part – decorating your blog! But here's a tip from someone who spent way too long agonizing over color schemes: don't let perfect be the enemy of done. Pick a simple theme that's easy on the eyes, slap your name on it, and start writing. You can always pretty it up later. Trust me, no one's going to leave your blog because your shade of blue isn't exactly right. Do add an "About Me" page though. Mine initially said, "Just a gal trying not to burn down her kitchen." It wasn't Shakespeare, but it was me. 5\. Actually Write Something (The Scary Part) Okay, here's where the rubber meets the road. You've got your blog set up, it looks decent enough, and now... you have to write. Cue panic attack, right? Here's the thing: your first post doesn't have to be a masterpiece. My first post was literally titled "Is this thing on?" and talked about how I almost set my oven on fire trying to bake cookies. Not exactly Pulitzer Prize material, but hey, it was a start! Some ideas to get you going: Introduce yourself and why you're blogging Share a recent experience (good or hilariously bad) Make a list of your favorite things (books, movies, pizza toppings, whatever!) The key is to just start. It's like ripping off a Band-Aid, but with less ouch and more "Hey, I did it!" 6\. Consistency is Key (But Life Happens) I read somewhere that I needed to post every day to be a "real blogger." Spoiler alert: that's nonsense. Quality over quantity, folks! Find a schedule that works for you. Maybe it's once a week, maybe it's twice a month. The important thing is to try to stick to it. Your readers (hi, Mom!) will know when to expect new content. But here's the real talk: life happens. Sometimes you'll miss a post. Don't beat yourself up about it. Your blog will still be there, I promise. 7\. Make Friends in the Blogosphere One of the coolest things about blogging? The community! Don't be shy about reaching out to other bloggers in your niche. Comment on their posts, share their stuff, maybe even suggest a collaboration. I met some of my best online friends through blogging. There's nothing quite like bonding over shared interests and mutual typos. 8\. Embrace the Learning Curve Here's a secret: we're all just figuring this out as we go along. You'll learn so much as you blog - about writing, about your topic, about weird internet subcultures you never knew existed. Embrace the journey! Try new things, experiment with different types of posts, and don't be afraid to pivot if something's not working. 9\. Tools of the Trade Now, let's talk tools. When I started, I thought I needed a gazillion apps and plugins to be a "proper" blogger. Turns out, less is often more. One tool I wish I'd known about when I started? Hunori. It's this cool all-in-one platform for blogging and creating a killer LinkInBio page. Perfect for when you want to level up from just blogging to building a whole online presence. Plus, it's super user-friendly, which is great for tech-challenged folks like yours truly. Other handy tools: A simple photo editor (because let's face it, we're not all Instagram models) Grammarly (for when you can't remember if it's "their," "there," or "they're") A notebook and pen (sometimes old school is the best school) 10\. Have Fun With It! Last but not least, remember to have fun! Your personal blog is just that - personal. It's your little corner of the internet to do with as you please. Some days you'll feel like the next big thing in blogging. Other days you'll wonder why you ever thought you could string two sentences together. Both are normal! The most important thing is to enjoy the process. Share your thoughts, connect with others, and create something that's uniquely you. Wrapping It Up So there you have it - a not-so-expert guide to starting your personal blog. Remember, every blogger you admire started exactly where you are now. So take a deep breath, write that first post, and welcome to the wonderful world of blogging! And hey, if you decide to blog about your journey to become a professional pillow fort builder or your quest to pet every dog in your city, let me know. I'd totally read that! Happy blogging, and may your Wi-Fi always be strong and your ideas always be flowing!
